Karen and Debbie have planned and led tutor orientations of all kinds at San Francisco State University. While the workshops are always active and multi-modal, the topics have varied: student retention, tenets of a tutoring center, anti-racist pedagogy, universal design, zoom tutoring, assessing student work.

Karen led several half-day tutor training workshops at Lick-Wilmerding High School, a private progressive high school in San Francisco, where she introduced peer tutors to a student-centered, skills-based approach to tutoring. During the interactive workshops, tutors investigated models for tutoring, and learned how to support their peers in various stages of the writing process, from brainstorming and organizing ideas to editing and proofreading.
